Lloyd Benes's guest opinion (March 15) not only reflected a true lack of knowledge but also a great deal of insensitivity regarding Colorado's End of Life Options Act (medical-aid-in-dying) and the people who chose to use it. Colorado's law requires two medical providers to certify that the applicant is terminally ill with six months or less to live. Also, the law requires that the applicant must be able to self administer the medication. To continue to stipulate a two-week waiting period is insensitive and unnecessary. In making their request, an applicant already has acknowledged being terminally ill and desiring to die with dignity. The current proposal (SB24-068) to amend the waiting time from 15 days to two days simply reduces the time of suffering.
