Robert Williams named new helm of Llandudno inshore search and rescue lifeboat

A POLICE officer has been named as the new helm of a search and rescue crew at Llandudno Lifeboat Station. North Wales Police officer and RNLI volunteer Robert Williams has taken on the senior role of Llandudno’s inshore lifeboat, which operates in shallow water and confined locations close to the cliffs. Mr Williams, known as Bert, has been volunteering at the Llandudno station for seven years, having served as a crew member on both the all-weather and inshore lifeboats. Before being promoted to the new role, which can include steering and guiding, Mr Williams was assessed on numerous different challenges of overseeing a D class inshore lifeboat.

Rob runs from Conwy to Llandudno and Rhyl RNLI stations to raise donations

A MAN ran to three RNLI stations along the North Wales coast to raise much-needed funds for the charity. Rob Batterbee completed the 19-mile route, which began at Conwy Lifeboat Station at 9am, in under three hours on Saturday, May 1. It formed part of the RNLI s Mayday Campaign, which encourages members of the public to carry out fundraisers with a difference so that life-saving volunteers can receive up-to-date equipment. Picture: Paul Frost/RNLI Mr Batterbee ran from Conwy through Llandudno Junction, Deganwy and Penrhyn Bay to Llandudno Lifeboat Station, where he arrived at 9.35am. He then travelled along the coast to Rhyl Lifeboat Station, crossing the finishing line at 11.50am as he was cheered on by RNLI volunteers

The latest annual statistics show that in 2020, RNLI volunteer crews at the 30 lifeboat stations - between Flint and Penarth - launched 918 times, aided 991 people and saved 36 lives. During the summer, RNLI lifeguards on beaches in South Wales, West Wales and Denbighshire in North Wales attended 1,046 incidents and aided 2,673 people.
