I loved the country,â he said. âAs a small autistic kid in the 1990s, it was easy for me to never have to look at the abject reality of this country s history: the genocide of Indigenous and African peoples and cultures, the financing of the worst war crimes in recorded history, the intentional cruelty towards the poor both at home and abroad.â

Black researchers say Seattle Mayor s Office has undermined their work to help reimagine public safety By

At the height of the protests against police violence last summer, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan made a promise: $100 million for Seattle s Black residents â later committed to communities impacted by systemic racism, broadly.
That money, in part, has funded Black-led research into how the city can adopt public safety programs with significant input from the community.
But that effort has since been hedged, caught in a tangle of red tape and tension between the Mayorâs Office, City Council, and stakeholders.
KUOW wins Three Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

Seattle, WA â KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio has won three 2021 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, which honor outstanding achievement in broadcast and digital journalism. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced the full list of regional winners today. All winners will automatically be entered into consideration for national Edward R. Murrow Awards.
KUOW received awards in the News Series and Digital categories, as well as Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a new category this year. Northwest News Network also received an award in the Feature Reporting category for a story by Tom Banse and KUOW Editor Derek Wang.

Washington state to create use of police force investigation office and public database By

Amid widespread calls for greater police accountability, Washington state is slated to create an office to independently investigate serious use of force incidents, along with a publicly accessible database documenting police use of force incidents.
Several other bills surrounding police reform are close to passage.
