It is a pleasure and honor to be here and share the stage with these wonderful scholars. Im grateful to Patrick Schroeder to having included me. So you have the surrender scene and i would like to turn to the surrender aftermath and the political debates spawned by appomattox and ill argue that lee and grant had distinct visions of what an honorable possess would look like and peace would look like and the two of the myths of the gentlemens meeting of the minds and they had fundamental visions of what an honorable peace would look like and why the war turned out the way it did. But i will try to take us beyond lee and grant as the appomattox drama unfolded the countrymen and women would crowd the scene and vest the surrender with their oesh as pir own aspirations and agendas and dreams and the dream in the eyes of africanamericans and so

Thank you. Its indeed a pleasure to be here. I think this is the 16th seminar. I think we owe a debt of gratitude to Longwood University and to dr. Coles and Patrick Schroder and you ought to give them all a round of applause. [ applause ] how many of you, and there are quite a few of you, have been to the mcclain house at appomattox courthouse . That makes things rather easy for me. Its time for lunch i believe. One thing thats probably not generally known is that the first offer of surrender didnt come from a letter from general grant. It came from a group of officers that have gathered april 7th and these officers concluded that because the circumstances facing the army that it might be best to suggest to general lee that he opened negotiations with general grant. I feel like i spent 13 years at monroe learning how to be a leader and it was an amazing opportunity to come to this school at buena vista and have an experience where we look at issues of equity and really focus on whats important for our students. I have to thank Deputy Superintendant guerrero for opposing the idea that i interview and all the members that interviewed me and really challenged me to think of the challenges ahead of me. I want to thank the lead team at this school this was here last year and all the models that really spent last year really listening to the community because i think our thought was that in a community that had merged quickly we did that last year Building Trust and developing our common under

Understanding how such a small part of these specific cells have developed and understanding of how stem cells work will aid our efforts in learning to manipulate stem cells to contribute towards development of regenerative medicine. The first day of the program i was extremely nervous and i think we all were. I saw the faces of 20 individuals whom i would later share a special unique experience for eight weeks. The first day in the lab arrived. I was very nervous and i can speak for the rest of our group that we all thought the same. We didnt know what to expect and we didnt know what to do. A process that took almost eight weeks from the beginning learning the basics what stem cells were and what it even meant. Cell culture, imaging and much more. That i had no idea before the summer what they were or th

She is clear, shes loud about it and shes able to engage. Teachers, parents and children. And every time we have our meetings, she comes back with a great story about what the children are teaching her. Even to suspend a child, jen always goes back and ask will that make a difference if we suspend this student . How can we make sure we do the best within the schools so that we are not sending that child home. For that, for her knowledge about our curriculum, for engaging a community in a school that needed that support and for believing in our children. I am so honored to introduce you the principal at buena vista, jennifer steiner. [ applause ] congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. Car and members of the board. Its an honor to be honored.
