For the past three weeks, Marion Newman and a group of predominantly Indigenous artists have been hard at work in Calgary creating a new opera.
While a well-known mezzo-soprano, this is Newman’s first time leading a project as a dramaturge. She enlisted playwright Yvette Nolan as librettist. Ian Cusson and Parmela Attariwala are the composers. Soprano Melody Courage, mezzo-soprano Michelle Lafferty and tenor Asitha Tennekoon were brought in to workshop the piece at Calgary Opera.
