Dutch regain gold standard at ISU Speed Skating World Cup Saturday, 30 January 2021
Home skaters returned to their customary gold standard today in the second round of the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup in Heerenveen.
On the same ice in the Thialf Arena
last week Dutch speed skaters won nine of the 12 gold medals on offer over the final two days of competition.
But the division A events began with a restatement of intent from a United States skater as Brittany Bowe, winner of the women’s 1,000 metres and 1,500m events last week, earned further success at the longer of those distances, finishing in 1min 53.455sec.
Schouten and Blondin finished one-two for a second straight week with Schouten edging Blondin by a toe in Heerenveen.
The 16-lap mass start features the short-track elements of all competitors taking off simultaneously from the start line and skaters jostling for position throughout the race. It was a spicy one today, Blondin said. The girls were feisty out there, which makes it a fun race for me because I get pumped when that happens. I had a good race, but near the finish I stumbled a little bit. I think if that would not have happed, I could have beat Schouten at the line because I had much more speed, but those things happen.
