Idaho Passes Bill To Kill 90% Of The State’s Wolves by : Cameron Frew on : 29 Apr 2021 14:33 PA Images/Pixabay Idaho lawmakers have passed a bill that will authorise killing 90% of the state’s wolves.  The controversial cull, designed to reduce wolf attacks on cattle, sheep and other wildlife, has been fast-tracked, having passed the state Senate last week. Advert 10 Given the Republican grip on the state legislature, it’s not surprising to see the legislation pass in the House with an overwhelming majority of 58-11. It’ll now be passed over to GOP Governor Brad Little, who hasn’t indicated his support for the bill as his office doesn’t comment on proposals prior to his signature.

Bill to Greatly Expand Wolf Hunting in Idaho Heads to Governor

Update (May 7): Republican Governor Brad Little signed bill SB1211 into law today, according toNational Geographic. Acontentious bill in Idaho, aimed at reducing the state’s wolf population by more than 90 percent, will soon land on the desk of the governor. Proponents of the bill say its passing will stop wolves from harassing and killing wildlife and livestock, while opponents counter that it goes too far and fails to consider the ecological consequences of removing so many large predators.  On April 21, the Idaho Senate approved the bill in a 26–7 vote. A week later, the Idaho House of Representatives voted 58–11 to send the bill on to Republican Governor Brad Little.

Idaho’s gray wolf population was recently estimated at 1,556, but sponsors of a bill approved in the state senate last week say that the preferred number of wolf packs in the state is 15. Because a wolf pack in the region averages 10 wolves, this means the bill could lead to hunters killing well over 1,000 wolves.
