The 37-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Watford, but was recalled by the Seagulls and allowed to bring his long association with the Premier League club to an end.
“It was an opportunity to play football under a regime I have played under before and to try and help the club progress and get out of the situation they are in,” Murray told Forest’s website.
“I had a successful period with Chris and really enjoyed working under him so I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Jurgen Klopp’s defensive crisis has increased after Joel Matip limped out of Thursday’s win at Tottenham with ankle ligament damage.
The Cameroonian was Klopp’s only fit senior centre-back with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez out with long-term injuries and the issue has been compounded with midfielder Fabinho, who has filled in for most of the season, missing with a minor muscle problem.
Since Sadio Mane’s opener against West Bromwich Albion, Liverpool have failed to hit the back of the net. Four games on the trot mean this side have equalled an unwelcome record set by Gerard Houllier’s team in May 2000. Nobody will have seen this happening…not this season, at least.
As Mane yet again toiled for 90 minutes and Mohamed Salah fail to inspire the home side off the bench, their own personal droughts continued. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits player confidence is an issue as a seven-hour goal drought contributed to the 1-0 defeat by Burnley which ended an unbeaten home league run stretching back to April 2017.
Ashley Barnes’s 83rd-minute penalty was his 100th senior club career goal and he became the first Burnley player to score an away league goal since October 3.
For Liverpool, whose 68-match unbeaten run at home was brought to an end, their goal drought now stretches to seven hours and 18 minutes.
