Five years ago the NHS announced part of Runcorn had been designated an “NHS Healthy New Town” with a goal of testing “creative solutions” to tackle problems such as obesity and dementia. Halton Lea NHS Healthy New Town was one of 10 areas chosen around the country to take part in the scheme and was announced by NHS chief executive Simon Stevens in March 2016.
