Federal government and province commit to shovel ready Hamilton Light Rail Transit project from McMaster to Eastgate

Today the Honourable Catherine McKenna, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament for Hamilton West – Ancaster – Dundas, and Caroline Mulroney, Ontario Minister of Transportation announced that both governments have signed a deal to invest nearly $3.4 billion in the shovel-ready Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. Each government is contributing 50% of eligible project costs, up to $1.7 billion. The federal contribution has been designated for LRT investment only, and is subject to approval by the Treasury Board of Canada. The project’s life cycle costs will be covered by the Government of Ontario.

TORONTO – The Ontario government is introducing new measures to help tradespeople get their certification from one reliable, streamlined destination through a new Crown agency, Skilled Trades Ontario, that would replace the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT).
Today, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development, introduced the Building Opportunities in the Skilled TradesAct, legislation designed to make the province’s skilled trades and apprenticeship system more efficient, accessible and easier to navigate.

Labour Minister Monte McNaughton, announcing the modernization plans during a virtual news conference Thursday, said his ministry has repeatedly been told the existing apprenticeship system is confusing and difficult to navigate.

“Over and over again, I’ve heard from young people: ‘I know how to become a doctor or a lawyer, but I have no idea how to become a welder or a millwright,’” McNaughton said. “One reason for this is the overlap between the Ontario College of Trades … and my ministry,” McNaughton said.
