discredit the nobel peace prize? it s largely for domestic reasons. apparently the chinese government wants to show to the chinese people that no amount of western pressure can make the current chinese government to change its policy on human rights and our democracy. and technically speaking, i think there must be a consensus at the highest level of the chinese government on the very tough position on this issue. my sense, also, i think probably along with minxin, granting the nobel peace prize to liu xiabo was a real impairme embarrassment to china. they have long admired the peace prize and the nobel prize. so to have the first chinese who wins the nobel to be somebody s who s in a chinese jail a real slap in the face. was he the first chinese? a chinese in france. including the dalai lama.
