This wasnt a history that you could find. Betty at first was surprised there was such a thing as a black marine. You dont believe it, ask a tuskegee airman. Hell tell you. Victor green was a mailman for 40 years, lived in harlem, lived right across the street from duke ellington. Victor green was a man with a seventh grade education yet he put together a publication that touched all aspects of life. My parents liked to travel. They figured that was helpful for our education. The thing was, finding the black section of town and you used the green book to find places to eat so i always knew that we couldnt stay places. Mr. Green was distinguished and even as a child, a very lovely man, and i would say it was unusual to have a black client working with a white printer. The green book, my dad found what was the first place that he could stay between new orleans and the end of the drive for that first day. And the next day we drove all the way to miami and we stayed at the Lord Calvert Hote

They met in kansas, where my mother lived, and my mother grew the up. During world war ii, my father was stationed there. That is when they met. Then my father was sent to france, and when the war was over they got married and moved to new york. And that is where i was born. At the Womans Hospital . The Womans Hospital, which is no longer there, near columbia university. And your family would go back south for holidays and summer vacations, weddings and funerals, things like that . You go south to her three times a year. We would go for thanksgiving, holidays mainly. Christmas, and we would visit my mothers family in kansas. This was before interstate highways as well. All humility, in order to set the stage, a question that i think was raised and discussed by members of the council and is of course broader concern to all of us including to all citizens around the world. How is it possible to achieve peace in the middle east . 20 years ago, at around the time of the first i asked this question to a friend of mine and who later was the chief justice of the israeli supreme court. Its common maybe just for americans to believe that wars have a beginning and end. Although of course the recent American Experience in afghanistan and iraq would be changing.
