Little Parndon pupils journey through Victorian history

Photo: Little Parndon Primary Academy Learning was brought to life as children lived by Victorian standards and rules for the day. Pupils at Little Parndon Primary Academy, in Harlow, were taken back in time as they sampled the life of a Victorian child. Children learnt about Queen Victoria and her life, practised copperplate handwriting, explored Victorian slang words and currency and played traditional games such as hide and seek and hopscotch. In keeping with the time, boys completed a manual task by building structures while the girls baked and took eloquence lessons.

Little Parndon Primary Academy pupils support young carers

Pupils at Little Parndon Primary Academy, in Harlow, supported Young Carers Action Day by wearing funky socks. The day was used to raise awareness among pupils about what a young carer is, how to let the school know if they believe they have a carer role and the support available to those taking care of someone at home. Georgina Jones, Young Carers school operational lead, said: “We took part in Young Carers Action Day to celebrate both the young carers we have in school and to show our support for young carers across the country. “The day was very successful and, as a result, we had children come forward who we had not yet identified as young carers and we will now go on and refer them to the specialist support services available. We will also support them in school as needed.”

Ambitious children have earned their classmates a visit from a published author. Pupils at Little Parndon Primary Academy entered the Collins Big Cat 1000 book competition which challenged them to decide what career a book character should have. The competition sparked discussion around what children aspire to be when they grow up. Pupils entered a picture and piece of writing to illustrate the career they would like in the future and explained why. Year 1 pupils Molly, Milly and Oliver were picked as the winner and runners-up, winning free copies of the Dani and Tara Binns books for the school library and a visit from author Lisa Rajan.

Budding author s book read and enjoyed by David Walliams

A child who spent lockdown writing a book has received high praise – from children’s author and TV personality David Walliams. Violet, Year 6 pupil at Little Parndon Primary Academy in Harlow, spent her time at home developing her story into an 11-chapter book. Working closely with her teachers via email, she was able to perfect A Friendship Adventure over ten weeks. Teacher Paige Wakelin, computing lead and e-safety officer, said: “A Friendship Adventure is a brilliantly descriptive, intense but humorous children’s story about two extra-terrestrials, a 15-year-old boy named Zack and a friendship dilemma.”
