Panthers at the WJC: Spencer Knight blanks Sweden as USA takes first in Pool B

Photo by Codie McLachlan/Getty Images Florida Panthers 2019 first rounder Spencer Knight stopped all 27 shots as the United States blanked Sweden 4-0 to win Pool B at the World Junior Championship to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Slovakia on Saturday. After a shaky opening game against Russia, Knight posted back-to-back shutouts over the Czech Republic and the Swedes in his next two starts. He is the first American goalie to accomplish that feat at the World Juniors, per USA Hockey. The 19-year-old Knight is now 2-1 with a 1.58 GAA and .934 save percentage. 2020 second-rounder Emil Heineman logged 12:24 of ice time and registered one shot on goal and a -1 rating in the loss. Heineman was on for Trevor Zegras’ first period goal which gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

In the only other game on Monday, Germany pulled off a 4-3 overtime victory over Slovakia with Mario Zimmermann providing the game-winning, power-play goal 4:01 into the extra session. Goaltender Spencer Knight will get the start for the United States vs. the Czech Republic in today’s early game at 2 p.m. Knight will be looking to bounce back from a poor performance against Russia on Friday.

The Panthers third-rounder (74th overall) in the 2020 NHL Entry didn’t figure in the scoring, but he did register three shots on goal and finished his first collegiate game with a +1 rating. The two teams will meet again tonight. Justin Schutz notched his second goal of the season in EC Red Bull Salzburg’s 4-1 loss to the Vienna Capitals in a Sunday game from Austria’s ICE Hockey League. Schutz’ power-play marker came 10:09 into the second period and tied the score at one apiece. He finished the game with three shots on goal and a -1 rating. Schutz has scored in back-to-back games after going goalless in his first 14 games of the season. He has produced nine points in 16 games for Red Bull.
