Charges have been dismissed against 58 of 97 people arrested during the unrest last year that lasted for more than 100 days between May and October
A further 32 cases are still pending but will also likely be dismissed
Several hundred others who were facing charges brought by the district attorney also had them dropped
The majority were facing lesser charges such as rioting and disorderly conduct

It’s now been more than a year since the nightly riots in Portland began in earnest, with combinations of Antifa and BLM activists tearing the town up. It’s long since become impossible to easily count up the number of public spaces that have been defiled and/or set ablaze. Police stations have been attacked, along with federal buildings. To their credit, the Portland Police have, at least on some occasions, managed to arrest some of the worst perpetrators. But what happened to all of those people who were led away in handcuffs? Each week when about 10,000 people are released from state and federal prisons around the country, their successful reintegration into civilian life may depend on how quickly they can get valid government-issued photo identification. It can be a major hurdle, and the process to get an ID has become even more cumbersome in some communities during the pandemic.
When people are incarcerated, especially for long periods of time, the government ID they had when entering prison like a driver’s license may no longer be valid when they are released. Yet this small piece of plastic is needed for many of life’s basic necessities like housing, employment, medical care, banking, and, for those who need it, government benefit programs like food stamps.
