But the Dandenong Drug Court ‘graduate’ was instead feted by a captive audience of state Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, Victoria’s Chief Magistrate Lisa Hannan and magistrates Susan Wakeling and Suzanne Cameron.
In the eyes of the justice system, Aaron is a “superstar” who made the most of a golden chance to recover from the lowest depths.
And the Drug Court is being hailed as a success story. A more cost-effective option than prison that delivers lower re-offending rates.
At the launch of the Drug Court’s new offices in Dandenong, he deservedly took centre stage.
Magistrate Richard Pithouse acknowledged the shortcomings of his approach after making the comments to the woman regarding a 2018 compensation claim in a rape case.
âChief Magistrate Hannan personally counselled the officer [Pithouse] in relation to appropriate judicial conduct and also engaged a retired judge of the county court to assist,â the commission said in a statement.
âThe officer was counselled on the need to exercise sensitivity, courtesy and respect towards all court users including victim-survivors of family violence. The officer accepted the criticisms of his conduct and acknowledged the shortcomings of his approach [and] actively engaged in the mentoring process.â
The commission finished its investigation into two complaints and one referral concerning Pithouse in April 2020.
It found that Pithouse made several improper statements in October 2018 during a victims of crime assistance tribunal (Vocat) hearing involving a woman who alleged she had been raped.
