The Tattooed Torah is an animated film that is based on the renowned children’s book by Marvell Ginsburg. This book has been educating children about the Holocaust for over 30 years. The book recounts the true story of the rescue and restoration of a small Torah from Brno, Czechoslovakia, and teaches the Holocaust not only as a period of destruction but also as an opportunity for redemption. The story of the Tattooed Torah is a profound story of love, bonds across generations, tradition, and resilience. But most of all, it’s a story of hope.
The adaptation of The Tattooed Torah into an animated short film is a three-generation endeavor. It was initiated by Marvell’s daughter, Beth Kopin, who had the dream of transforming this book into a film, and is one of the executive producers. Beth will be joined by the film’s producer (our very own Boulderite) Lisa Effress, director Marc Bennett, animator Christian Robins, film editor John Polk,
“
It is not the critic who counts.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again; who knows great enthusiasm; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at worst, if he fails at least he fails while daring greatly.” –Theodore Roosevelt
This quote sums up my attitude about life. I’m most comfortable swimming in creative waters and have gotten used to crazy highs and lows. Most artists/creatives see silver linings regardless of outcome. The interesting part to a momentary high, it needs to be tempered with perspective. We do our work hoping for recognition but that is not the reason for creating, it is done with a higher purpose in mind, “the calling”.
An animated short film narrated by actor Ed Asner called "The Tattooed Torah" kicks off the upcoming fifth annual Screening the Holocaust Film Series, presented virtually this year in partnership between the Miami Jewish Film Festival, the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies at the University of Miami, the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach and UM's Holocaust Teacher Institute.
Our Hero: Little Torah
The Tattooed Torah has been life changing
. I was inspired to dig deeper, better understand Little Torah’s journey from Brno to Chicago, so I retraced the path. My soul had been yearning to face the reality of my People’s/Little Torah’s history. The experience was profoundly meaningful…
Brno
Brno town square. Beautiful but considered dangerous, where Jews were rounded up and taken away.
Continuing to build the team: #13 Little Torah. The Journey…Brno-Prague-Michle-London-Chicago. I flew to Prague (with family) during Passover, (holiday of redemption) then drove three hours to Brno, Little Torah’s birthplace. Walking through the streets of Brno felt eerily familiar, the town square and building facades were similar in style to the book/film illustrations by Martin Lemelman. That made me smile…
