Teacher Gets Seven Years in Prison for Sexually Abusing Female Student

A former Oregon high school teacher and coach who pleaded guilty to having oral sex with a teenage student was sentenced to just over seven years in prison on Thursday.
A judge sentenced Lisa DeFluri, 31, on Thursday in Lane County Circuit Court after she pleaded guilty to 11 counts of second-degree sex abuse on April 19, the
Court documents allege DeFluri sexually abused a girl under 18 years of age between July 3 and December 1, 2020.
DeFluri was head coach of the Thurston High School girl’s basketball team and also taught tenth-grade English as well as English support classes.
A former Thurston High School basketball coach and teacher was sentenced to a little more than seven years in prison Thursday, after being found guilty of sexually abusing a student she coached.
Court documents allege DeFluri was sexually abusing a female younger than 18 between July 3 and Dec. 1, 2020.
DeFluri was head coach of the Thurston s girls basketball team and previously had been listed on the school s website as a 10th grade teacher for English and English support classes.
None of the alleged actions was considered consensual because the girl was younger than 18. DeFluri was her coach.
Second-degree sex abuse, according to Oregon state statute, pertains to when someone either commits specific acts such as sexual intercourse without consent, or when a person 21 years of age or older commits third-degree sexual abuse and was the victim s coach at any time before the abuse.
Experts say DeFluri case all too common
Advocates are weighing in on an issue they say is often ignored.

SESAME, which stands for Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct and Exploitation, is an organization based in Las Vegas, Nevada, that aims to make schools safer for students. SESAME has been tracking educator sexual misconducts since 2014 and they said the research shows that this issue occurs almost daily.
