Ultimate Guide: Westfield Matildas v Sweden

It s time Football Australia adhere to their own policies and principles

Share on Twitter From creating history at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, to achieving pay parity with the Socceroos, and securing the rights to jointly host the Women’s World Cup in 2023 - this list represents just how far we’ve come since inaugural Matildas captain Connie Byrnes donned the armband in 1978. As a nation, we have revelled with the side when they’ve won and supported them when they’ve encountered off-field dramas, which included the unsavoury pay strike, the controversial sacking of coach Alen Stajcic and crashing out of France 2019 in the round of 16. In the last year however, there have been more philosophical wins, both on and off the pitch, than there have been losses.

W-League stars convene with eyes on Tokyo Olympics and beyond

Share on Twitter 26 of the 2020-21 W-League season’s best performers assembled in Sydney on Tuesday for the first day of a Women’s Talent Identification Camp organised by Football Australia to provide a potential pathway to the Matildas for domestically based talent.  Unable to be selected for the national team’s recent training camp in the Netherlands and friendlies against Germany and the Dutch, the four-day bivouac looms as one of the best, and last, opportunities for domestically-based players to break into Australia s 18-player squad for the coming Olympic Games.  Matildas boss Tony Gustavsson not able to attend in person, assistant coach Andreatta has taken charge of proceedings - the former Brisbane Roar boss also having overseen the first Talent ID camp staged back in November - and has been encouraged by the early signs on display.

26 Australian-based players presented with opportunity to impress at second Women s Talent ID Camp

“Many of the selected players were in contention to be a part of the April FIFA window before the health and safety protocols enforced deemed them ineligible. It has been fantastic to see how they have responded to the disappointment and highlights the character in the group.” This Women’s Talent ID Camp is part of raft of initiatives Football Australia have put into effect to create high performance environments to allow for excellence to shine.” The 26 players selected have been invited on the back of strong performances in the November 2020 camp, eye‑catching appearances in the W-League and through the enhanced scouting network – across all age groups – of the women’s national team program.
