It has been almost two months since cinema halls re-opened in the state post the Covid-19 lockdown, but operators are still waiting for higher footfall. Multiplexes and several single screens had opened with 50% occupancy norms in place. Moreover, though the Centre allowed theatres to open with 100% occupancy from February, the Odisha government is yet to implement this in the state. While multiplexes are claiming that they have witnessed reasonable footfall in the last one month, the owners of single-screen theatres are not happy with the number of viewers turning out for shows. More importantly, according to them, they are incurring even more losses after reopening the halls. Some single screens have not reopened at all and have decided to wait till the situation changes completely.

Odisha government allows cinema halls to open in January | Bhubaneswar News

Representative image BHUBANESWAR: Cinema halls and theatres in Odisha are allowed to operate from January 1 with up to 50 per cent capacity after a gap of almost nine months as the state government on Wednesday issued fresh guidelines for January. Jatras, open air theatres and entertainment parks are likely to be opened soon as the local authorities like district collectors and municipal commissioners are authorized to take a call subject to compliance of Covid-safety protocols, a decision welcomed by the jatra artists. Though the Centre had allowed cinemas to operate from October with a one seat distance in order to maintain appropriate physical distance, the state government had not allowed them to open in Odisha.
