Norman Powell has threaded the needle inside his role since joining the Portland Trail Blazers in late March. But it’s more than just his two-way play that has his teammates grinning. Powell’s championship experience has helped guide the team through its recent rocky stretch, writes Lindsey Wisniewski NBA Sports Northwest.
Powell, who landed in Portland in exchange for Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood, has averaged 17.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 33.9 minutes. His productive play comes 22 months after Powell and his former Toronto Raptors teammates held aloft the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Since returning to the NBA, Carmelo Anthony has been able to more appropriately put a cap on a storybook career. The Portland Trail Blazers surrendered 47 points to the Clippers in the first 12 minutes of Tuesday’s loss. Norman Powell, who recorded 32 points of his own against Los Angeles, sounded off on Portland’s poor defensive effort after the game.
NBC Sports Northwest’s Lindsey Wisniewski highlighted Powell’s postgame comments. According to the former Raptors guard, Damian Lillard voiced his displeasure with the Blazers’ lack of defense in a first-half huddle.
“We have to come out and be physical,” Powell said. “I think Dame said it first. They way we were playing they were taking advantage of how soft we were being on the defense end. We were getting punked. Him getting on us like that in the huddle motivated us. We came out of the time out and went on that run, but it shouldn’t take that, or your star guy coming out and getting on it, we gotta have that mindset at the start of the game, and coach said it again at the end of the game

On two separate occasions this season, Phoenix Suns All-Star guard Chris Paul has contributed to his team getting the better of the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite those two victories, Paul had an interesting assessment of the Blazers, as highlighted by Lindsey Wisniewski of NBC Sports Northwest. After the game, he had a simple message: Don’t judge this Portland team just yet.
Easy as it is to forget, the Trail Blazers have played 36 games this season, missing CJ McCollum for 23 of them and Jusuf Nurkic for 24 of them. In gauging what the 127-121 win over a similar Playoff-type team meant, Paul noted that evaluating this Blazers team without their two other stars would be a bit premature.
