Late-game heroics secured the final road contest of the regular season for the Seawolves.
On Tuesday, May 4, the Stony Brook softball team took to Queens to play its final scheduled non-conference game this year against the St. John’s Red Storm. Coming off of a three-game losing streak, the Seawolves looked to get the bad taste out of their mouths with a win.
Stony Brook went with a slightly different look for this game, starting junior pitcher Shelbi Denman in the circle, which was her first appearance since April 8. The Seawolves also started three bench players in the lineup: freshman outfielder Alicia Orosco, sophomore second baseman Brooke Dye and sophomore catcher Corinne Badger.

The Stony Brook softball team has hit poorly with runners in scoring position for most of the season, but has consistently found ways to win regardless. This Saturday and Sunday, their struggles finally caught up to them when they were swept by the Albany Great Danes in a three-game road series; the Seawolves were outscored 11-3 despite outhitting Albany 21-17.
The trio of losses dropped Stony Brook to 9-4 in-conference and into a first-place tie with the UMBC Retrievers, who swept the Maine Black Bears this weekend. The Seawolves conclude their regular season next weekend at home against UMBC in a series that will now determine the America East champion.

It was a battle for first place when the Stony Brook softball team hosted UMass Lowell at University Field on Wednesday, April 28 for what could have been a standings-altering doubleheader. However, the Seawolves made the most of their opportunity, extending their hold on first place in the America East from two games to four by sweeping the series in thrilling fashion.
UMass Lowell had the chance to even itself up with Stony Brook in the standings, as a sweep for them would have made both teams 7-3 in conference play.
Playing their most important series to date, the Seawolves turned to senior pitcher Dawn Bodrug for game one. Bodrug was coming off of an untouchable weekend performance in Maine, where she pitched complete-game shutouts on both Saturday and Sunday, striking out 22 batters in the process. She entered with a 23.1 innings scoreless streak. That was snapped immediately.
