Central Maryland is ‘Epicenter’ for ‘The Cicada Summer and Brood X’
Residents can expect to see millions of cicadas emerging sometime this month. They’ve been underground for the past 17 years. The last time this brood of creepy crawlers visited us was 2004.
“We are in the epicenter here in central Maryland for the cicada summer and Brood X,” said Montgomery Parks Nature Center Manager Angela Yau.

The Montgomery County Council approved a new phased reopening strategy that takes effect Tuesday at 5 pm.
Now that more than 50% of county residents have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, many safety restrictions will be eased.
Here are some of the significant changes in the new amended public health order that goes into effect Tuesday at 5 pm:
Gathering limits increase to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors.
Businesses limited to 25% capacity move to 50% capacity if they do not sell or permit the consumption of food or drink.
Camps can move to the gathering limits of 50 indoors and 100 outdoors.
County Council Considers New Reopening Guidelines
As vaccination rates continue to increase and COVID-19 cases trend downward in Montgomery County, local leaders are considering easing some restrictions this week.
“The county council acting as the Board of Health is working with our public health team to determine guidelines for additional activities to resume,” said County Council President Tom Hucker during his weekly virtual media briefing on Monday.
The county council is expected to vote on the new reopening guidelines on Tuesday.
