Controversial plans to build around 6,000 homes on two sites in the borough’s north-west are included in the draft local plan, which was approved for consultation at an extraordinary council meeting held at Enfield Grammar School on Wednesday. Dozens of protesters gathered outside the school gates ahead of the meeting to demand councillors ditch the plans and save the green belt.

The council’s Blue and Green Strategy, which sets out a ten-year plan for the protection, management and expansion of the borough’s waterways and green spaces, was approved at the annual council meeting on Wednesday. It is designed to inform the development of future planning policies and help achieve the borough’s aim of being carbon-neutral by 2040. The plan aims to boost blue-green infrastructure in Enfield by 25 per cent, while “protecting and improving existing assets”.

Transport for London (TfL) wants motorists to ensure their vehicles comply with the standards for the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ), which will be extended to the North Circular Road next year. Drivers with older cars that do not meet the emissions standards will have to pay £12.50 per day to travel into the zone from October 25.
