John Swenson, 25, was sentenced in Adams County Court, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. He was found guilty in late April. “This brutal crime shocks the conscience,” District Attorney Brian Mason said in a statement after Swenson pleaded guilty last month. “The defendant’s brutality against his own grandmother was truly unspeakable. I appreciate the jury returning a just verdict in this case.”

On Dec. 9, 2019, Westminster police responded to an apartment at a senior housing center on 68th Avenue when Shomberg s daughter called to report that she was concerned because she hadn t been in contact with her mother Linda in several days, according to prosecutors.

Officers with the Westminster Police Department had responded to a call regarding a welfare check around noon on Dec. 9, 2019. The police department had received the call from a woman who said she was concerned about her mother, Shomberg, since she hadn t heard from her in three days, according to an affidavit.
