MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) The U.S. Supreme Court has rebuffed a central Indiana man s appeal of his life sentence for fatally shooting a Ball State University student in 1994 during an attempted robbery.
The court issued an order Monday declining to hear Larry Wayne Newton Jr. s appeal of a Delaware County judge s 2016 decision denying his bid for post-conviction relief, The Star Press reported.
“The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision finally closes the book on this horrendous saga,” Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said Tuesday in a statement.
Newton was 17 in September 1994 when the Muncie resident fatally shot Christopher Coyle a 19-year-old Ball State University student from Pendleton during an attempted off-campus robbery.

MUNCIE, Ind. The U.S. Supreme Court won’t consider the latest and perhaps final appeal of convicted killer Larry Wayne Newton Jr.
The Muncie man was 17 when he fatally shot Christopher Coyle a 19-year-old Ball State University student from Pendleton during an attempted robbery in an alley east of the campus in September 1994.
A year after the homicide, Newton pleaded guilty to murder, part of a plea agreement that saw prosecutors end their pursuit of a death sentence.
Judge Robert Barnet Jr. later imposed a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, as had been specified in the plea deal.
Appeals court upholds Muncie man s gun conviction
MUNCIE, Ind. The Indiana Court of Appeals has upheld a Muncie man s gun-related conviction that led to an eight-year prison term.
A Delaware Circuit Court 3 jury in November 2019 found Scott D. Hartman, now 50, guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony carrying up to 12 years in prison, and driving while suspended, a misdemeanor.
Judge Linda Ralu Wolf later imposed the eight-year sentence.
Testimony at the trial indicated Hartman had been arrested on June 28, 2019 for driving while suspended after a traffic stop.
A police K-9 indicated there was a controlled substance in the Muncie man s GMC Jimmy. Officers reported finding marijuana, and a rifle Hartman reportedly admitted owning, in the SUV.
