Ames Tribune Story County resident Greg Artz’s fight for broadband connectivity spans 10 years –– and now, he s looking to the sky and Elon Musk for answers. A decade ago, Artz moved less than a mile outside Ames city limits, where his home has no access to broadband and attempts to bring his home up to speed have been fruitless. Throughout the pandemic, Artz and his teenage son have relied on a hot spot for working and schooling from home, often proving unreliable.  “Broadband internet is not a political issue,  Artz said.  It s the people that have it have it and they don t care about the people that don t have it.

Ioway Creek: Decades before name change, a Native teen led the cause in Ames

Ames Tribune Editor s note: This story has been updated to remove an incorrect description of the gender make-up of the Ames City Council in 1994; to reflect the lack of clarity on whether Stubben had the chance to speak before that council; and to clarify that a packet of paperwork on the name change was required by a federal governmental organization. Nearly three decades ago, 16-year-old Fawn Stubben prepared to stand before the Ames City Council to talk about what she said was the real meaning behind a local creek s name: Female genitalia. But that conversation never happened.  Stubben, whose mother is from the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe and father is from the Ponca tribe, wanted to explain why the name of Ames Squaw Creek needed to change.

  Funding for cultural projects at KHOI comes from a generous donation from Ames Commission on the Arts. LOCAL TALK 26 February 2021 Local Talk for February 26 included a story about renaming the Creek going through Ames to Ioway Creek. Board of Supervisor Chair, Linda Murken related the history of the renaming process to Ioway Creek. Tribal Preservation historian, Lance Foster honored the airwaves with Ioway history, justification for renaming the creek, and an update of current Ioway activities.  The Ioway Nation perseveres.  Susan Gwiasda with City of Ames segment included Justin Clausen talking about major efforts dealing with snow and water related issues in light of the Texas snowstorm and water debacle.  Anna Banana featured a Carole Pluckrose selection from Maya Angelou.
