Hey Mayor, Tell Markey New Bedford Needs Sewer Aid [OPINION]

Hey Mayor, Tell Markey New Bedford Needs Sewer Aid [OPINION] The Environmental Protection Agency is apparently ready to lower the boom on the City of New Bedford for not completing eight federally-mandated infrastructure projects under the Clean Water Act, but the Mitchell Administration doesn t appear to be too concerned about it. City Council Finance Committee Chair Linda Morad said city residents can expect higher sewer and water rates to pay for the projects. Morad said the city faces a potential EPA fine of $58,000 per day per project if work does not resume PDQ. She said after making progress on completing the mandates, work has stalled due to a lack of funds and the COVID-19 crisis.

New Bedford Non-Profit Purchasing Furniture Store Site

New Bedford Non-Profit Purchasing Furniture Store Site NEW BEDFORD A furniture shop is set to become the new home for one of New Bedford’s oldest non-profit organizations. Child and Family Services, which began as the New Bedford Orphans’ Home in 1843, is under agreement to purchase the property at 965 Church Street that is the current home of Regal House Furniture. Regal House is closing down its New Bedford facilities and moving all operations to its Fairhaven location. Child and Family Services is looking to relocate and combine the services provided at its longtime facility at 1061 Pleasant Street along with those offered at 543 North Street into one facility on the Church Street property. It would utilize one half of the existing facility there as a mental health counseling center, with the other half serving as the home of a 24-hour-a-day inpatient facility.

Morad Files Letter Claiming Handicap Parking a Luxury [OPINION]

In a January 20 Traffic Commission meeting, New Bedford City Councilor Linda Morad shockingly came out against modest accommodations being made for her disabled constituents, stating, I dislike the millions of handicap parking spaces across the city (see 20:11 of the video below). After her stomach-turning ableist tirade, Morad remained completely silent on the issue, making no effort to clarify or apologize for her comments. Now, just under five weeks later, it appears Councilor Morad s assault on the city s disabled community may not be over. Ahead of the New Bedford City Council s March 11 meeting, Morad filed a letter on the record from a constituent, requesting it be referred to the Traffic Commission. This letter, written anonymously, is full of comments equally as discriminatory and disgusting as the ones Morad made earlier this year.

New Bedford Council Candidate List Continues to Grow [OPINION]

More candidates are joining the 2021 race to be on the New Bedford City Council. The candidates are also raising money – well, most of the candidates are raising money. It comes as no surprise that most of the candidates are looking to get elected to an at-large seat given the upcoming retirement of Deb Coelho from the council. An open seat among the five at-large seats is a rare occurrence. An open seat is even rarer than an incumbent at-large councilor losing re-election. The three most active non-incumbents so far are Matthew Keefer, Jason Mello, and Lisa White. They have been doing outreach to the public and they have been raising campaign funds, which you can see in the list at the bottom of this article.
