On June 5, a fundraiser for Adrian Howard, a local five-year-old boy diagnosed with idiopathic aplastic anemia last year, will take place at SideTrac Liquidation in Haw River, at 340 Trollingwood Road.
Aplastic anemia is a very rare and serious condition in which the body cease to produce enough blood cells. According to the Mayo Clinic, with aplastic anemia stem cells are damaged, causing the bone marrow to become empty (aplastic) or contain few blood cells.
Treatments for this condition include medication, blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants.
Adrian received a bone marrow transplant on May 13 and, as a result, must remain in the hospital 40-plus days.
