Strong earthquake, magnitude 6 in Mono County, rattles Central California, Sierra Nevada
SACRAMENTO An earthquake jolted Central California on Thursday afternoon, shaking up residents of the Sierra Nevada foothills and the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys.
The shaking struck at 3:49 p.m., revised to a magnitude 6.0, and was centered in the Little Antelope Valley about four miles south of Coleville in Mono County, about 150 miles east of Sacramento.
Seismologists dubbed it the Antelope Valley earthquake during a 5:30 p.m. briefing.
There were dozens of aftershocks reported.
The USGS Lind Gee, a geophysicist, told the Sacramento Bee, It s a fairly significant aftershock sequence.
That s to be expected after such a huge earthquake, according to Gee.
Personal Accounts
John McGinness, a former local sheriff, was performing a radio show.
McGinness told the Bee, I tried to be composed and say, I m experiencing something here. This one lasted a little longer than the others, so I started getting calls about the earthquake, asking, Did you feel that? It s probably the longest thing I ve ever done. After that, I ve felt better, but not for very long.

What’s with all the earthquakes? California’s latest rattles Bay Area from beneath the ocean [The Sacramento Bee]
Dec. 31 Maybe 2020 is going out with a bang.
The Bay Area was shook by a magnitude 3.6 earthquake early Thursday, the third quake of at least a 3 magnitude in four days in Northern California.
A leading California seismologist said the quakes are not particularly alarming.
“This is just normal activity,” said Lind Gee, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. “That’s good to hear, right?”
The Bay Area quake, recorded 9 miles below the ocean off the shore of Muir Beach north of San Francisco, followed two earlier quakes this week.
