Host we get to talk about the Supreme Court history for an hour. I want to start by understanding the court today. The way our court is structured and how it has evolved, how does the chief justice in this era wield authority . What tools do they have . Elizabeth the answer to that question is, in this era, as always, the chief justice, first and foremost, is the head and steward of one of our three ranches of government. I think there are some unique spects about that job in the sense that the court is not a political branch. It was deliberately designed not to be. The chief has a difficult job, because, im sure you heard this expression. The chief is chief among equals. They cannot control the other justices. They have the power to cajole, but not control. And there are some Great Stories throughout history that illustrate that very well. Host specifically, does the chief have a role in what cases are heard, and who writes the opinions . We have many distinguished guests from the nixon and other administrations and we are honored to have you here tonight. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Patricia Nixon becoming the first lady of the united states. Under her leadership the white house collection added over 600 paintings and furnishing elements to the white house collection, which is the most of any presidency. The significance of this will be discussed in tonights program, but its very important to us here at the white house of our mission which was inspired as most of you or all of you know by first Lady Jacqueline kennedy to be the private nonpartisan private partner to the white house for conservation, preservation, restoration of those beautiful staterooms in the white house, for the acquisition of items for the Permanent Collec
Our final speaker this morning is brian dirck. Brian is a professor of history at Anderson University in indiana. He is the author of numerous books on Abraham Lincoln including lincoln and davis, imagining america, lincoln the lawyer, lincoln and the constitution, Abraham Lincoln and White America and lincoln and indiana. His subjects probed some of the most interesting and relevant topics in lincolns life and he has won awards for his work including one from the new york civil war roundtable. He recently had the opportunity to travel to seoul, where he addressed the korean Abraham Lincoln society. I know i would like to hear more about that. [laughter] how can i get on the gravy train . Weekend. The Lincoln Group of the district of columbia hosted this event. Our speaker tonight is wendy allen. Most people in the room know who wendy allen is. For those who dont, shes an artist. Wendy allen first painted did her First Painting of Abraham Lincoln in 1983. Since then shes focussed on him as her subject and has made many, many paintings in many different styles. Shes listen very active, been interviewed by cnn and had her paintings in the Historical Society along with some other people you might have heard of. Salvador dolly, norman rockwell. Certainly in very good company and so were they. In addition to all this, she lives in gettysburg and has a gallery up there, lincoln into art. Shes also very active with the fellowship of pennsylvania. Shes on the board and a Vice President to the fellowship of pennsylvania. Shes also very active in the Lincoln Forum and a lot of us went there this past year. We had a record turn out. Were going to try to beat that record this year
