A Utah lawmaker has put on hold a proposed bill that would require public schools in his state to post all learning materials online for parents to review.
A new bill passed by the Senate Education Committee would require school districts to be more involved with parents in building school curriculum. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Lincoln Fillmore.
The bill would require that public school boards create an “open process” involving parents to review and recommend teachers’ instructional materials. Many teachers say the move is unnecessary and sends the wrong message.
Two bills are under consideration by the Utah Legislature that would require school boards to give parents more input in school curriculum. One would require publishing curriculum for parents to review in advance, the other would make teachers post a syllabus for each day of instruction.
