Bay Area School Districts Offer Cash Incentives to Keep Teachers From Leaving

District officials would like its human resources office filled with teacher applicants, but educators are just not coming. I m not panicking at this time, but it is a concern that we have that number of open positions in the beginning of July, said Juan Cruz, Franklin-McKinley School District superintendent. The district did what it could to keep its teachers by giving them, along with other staff, a $4,500 bonus for working through the challenges of virtual learning throughout the pandemic. The bonus was not a way for us to recruit, but rather to show appreciation to our current staff, Cruz said.

OU School of Visual Arts names winners of logo competition

The OU School of Visual Arts’ Visual Communication department selected the winners of its logo competition for the 107th Annual School of Visual Arts Student Exhibition. This year’s winners are visual communications junior Lily Nguyen and visual communications junior Blake Jones. Nguyen and Jones collaborated to create their winning logo titled “Art for All.”  Via the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art s newsletter Nguyen and Jones became friends throughout their years at OU by being in the same classes before and after being accepted into the School of Visual Arts’ Visual Communication department. “We saw how much work it would be and we thought it would be smart to team up. It was like a natural partnership,” Jones said. 

Well-versed Lancaster Country Day School senior wins regional poetry contest

Lily Nguyen, a senior at Lancaster Country Day School, was named the winner of the 2021 Poetry Out Loud competition, South Central PARTners at Millersville University announced in a press release last week. The regional contest is part of a national program to foster students appreciation for poetry though memory and performance. “Winning this contest was honestly a huge surprise for me,” Nguyen wrote in an email. “By helping me strengthen my love and skill of poetry recitation, (Poetry Out Loud) has been an extremely rewarding experience that I believe every student should take part in.”  For the regional contest, Nguyen and five other students from across Lancaster, Berks and Schuylkill counties were tasked with memorizing and reciting poems selected from the Poetry Out Loud online and print anthologies.
