Hawaii researchers finish catalog for plants found on Kauai

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) Researchers at a Hawaii nonprofit dedicated to tropical plant research and conservation have completed an analysis of plants that are native to and only found on Kauai.
The researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden completed the Kauai catalog of endemic plants for the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species last month, the Garden Island reported Monday.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species catalogues the extinction risk of animal, fungus and plant species worldwide and is used in conservation, government agencies and a variety of other entities to inform decision-making and further research, the newspaper reported.
Police chief apologizes after probe finds he mocked Asians

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) The police chief on the Hawaiian island of Kauai has apologized after a discrimination investigation found he mocked people of Asian descent.
Kauai Police Chief Todd Raybuck, speaking in a video posted on social media, said his comments were insensitive and improper as the chief of police,” The Garden Island newspaper reported this week.
“In hindsight, I recognize regardless of my intent, my words have caused people pain,” Raybuck said in the statement. “I look forward to the opportunity to apologize directly to those who have been hurt by my words and I hope that we may repair our relationships moving forward.”
