Calls for Derby tram network to replace £250M road scheme
Campaigners have called for Derby to consider building a tram system along the route of the old Great Northern railway instead of pushing ahead with a major road-widening scheme.
The Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) has urged for the government and Highways England to consider scrapping the £250M A38 widening scheme in preference to a tram system modelled in a similar fashion to Nottingham’s tram network.
According to the LRTA the road scheme, which has seen Bam Nuttall appointed as main contractor with Aecom as consulting engineer, is expected to be thrown out by the High Court due to a lack of environmental and climate change damage being taken into account when devising the project.
