As a kid in the netherlands, i loved playing with computers resulting in a passion for open Source Software. Driven by this and my entrepreneurial spirit, i spent much of my career at Startup Software companies. One was blender, the First Company to publish a free 3d software. This turned out to be important. In 2006 i learned about the technology called 3d printing which prints physical objects based on 3d computer designs. I immediately thought of the blender community. A large group of enthusiasts. They were using 3d software but never imagined it would be possible to hold their own designs in their hands. I a
Think to his last point about safety is at the core of the connected vehicle is safety. There is the technology that has been around for 18 years that will notify in the case of an accident and if you think about how many accidents are reported from the vehicle from those technologies its out there and connected. How do they keep up . I think its things like this and i think their initiatives where we as an industry need to start coming together. Im not a believer that we need to throw policy at everything that happens in the car because policy often will stymie innovation. I think the technology that got us to the safer cars, these connected cars they technology that allows us to have handsfree calling in cars the technology that connects you to your dealer or the diagnostic that same technology can be used to solve some of these things that i think nhtsa is worried about and i agree with him 100 when he should come together as an industry and we need all the players at the table to f
Workable are those solutions. I mean, if you just step back from men think about this, any new technology for connected vehicle they put into the marketplace at best will go on 50, 60 million vehicles in the United States in 87 the million globally. Here in the United States you have 303 million vehicles already in the car park and get you are only producing 15 fists or 16 million new vehicles each year. Have the really making effective with it might take utility years for the technology to propagate throughout. So regulators need to understand that legislating something instantaneously does not mean you fix the problem. In fact of you may cause a bigger problem. And you may increase the cost of the technology. So it is much better in my mind to try to work through and facility with the players to understand really what is possible.
