A jubilant crowd of nurses and staff surrounded a white cake at Life St Dominic’s Hospital in Southernwood on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the institution’s 75th birthday. The hospital, which opened as the Mater-Dei maternity hospital on April 26 1948, has been upgraded, but the statue of Mother Mary still welcomes patients at the now mechanical sliding doors.
The case of former Selborne College pupils accused of severely assaulting their schoolmates at the Norton House hostel hit a delay after it was postponed to May. The accused, Alizwa Matwa, Liyema Badli and Liyabona Masebe, appeared in the East London magistrate’s court on Thursday before magistrate Rochel Sam.
The Life Beacon Bay Hospital on Monday unveiled the new R17m expanded intensive care unit which transformed the former six-bed unit into a 10-bed unit. “It’s beautiful, there are so many things I wasn’t expecting, we will see what it looks like with patients,” said neurosurgeon Dr Zwelithini Mpungana, one of the doctors shown the revamped ICU by business operations manager Bruce Janssens.
