Parl panel concerned over tea plantation workers in Bengal, Assam being denied social security benefits | India News

NEW DELHI: The parliamentary standing committee on labour has expressed concern to the labour ministry over tea plantation workers in Assam and West Bengal being denied social security benefits, minimum wages, Provident Fund and Gratuity benefits. In its report on the labour and employment ministry’s demands for grants for 2021-22, tabled in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the Bhartruhari Mahtab-led House panel said that it was concerned to note that numerous tea gardens faced closure during the current fiscal and even in those that remained functional, many workers were reportedly not provided with social security benefits, minimum wages, Provident Fund benefits and Gratuity benefits.

Former banker jailed over N970,000 fraud

TODAY March 12, 2021 The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has sentenced an ex-banker, Ebe Okokon, to six months’ imprisonment but with an option of N600,000 for fraud involving N970,000. A statement by the spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wilson Uwujaren, stated on Friday that the trial judge, Archibong Archibong, handed down the verdict on Thursday. The sentence was said to have followed a plea bargain the convict reached with the EFCC. Mr Okokon, who was accused of defrauding his victim using a forged document of his former bank, therefore pleaded guilty to three counts of stealing and forgery.

Ramazan package: Minister promises maximum relief to people

Lahore March 10, 2021 LAHORE:On the directive of the prime minister, the Punjab government has started working out a special package to provide a subsidy on essential items, including flour, sugar and vegetables, to provide maximum relief to the people during the Holy Month of Ramazan. A meeting of the committee formed on the direction of the chief minister to prepare recommendations for the Ramzan package was held at Darbar Hall of Civil Secretariat here on Tuesday. Provincial Industries Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal, the chief secretary, administrative secretaries of different departments, including industries, agriculture and livestock, the Lahore commissioner, director food, director general public relations and the Punjab cane commissioner attended the meeting.
