Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said reinstating JobKeeper would not be a solution to the immediate assistance required by business in the wake of continuing lockdowns in the nation’s southern states.
Despite 13 million Australians – more than half of the country’s population – now in lockdown, Mr Morrison is standing firm on his decision not to return to JobKeeper as pressure mounts from local and state government leaders.
“I’m not trying to solve last year’s problem,” said Mr Morrison on Wednesday. “I’m trying to solve the issues and provide economic supports directly to individuals fast.”

Victoria has committed a further $282 million to support 90,000 businesses hit by the extension of the state’s lockdown, bringing total support for the current lockdown to $484 million, Industry Minister Martin Pakula says.
Victorian Industry Minister Martin Pakula has extended support to 90,000 businesses bringing the total support for the two recent lockdowns to nearly $1 billion.

Under the package, eligible Licensed Hospitality Venue fund recipients will get $4200, taking the total payment to $7200, while Business Costs Assistance program recipients will get $2800, increasing the total grant to $4800.
“Businesses that had chosen not to apply for these support programs in relation to the May-June lockdown, or had been ineligible to apply but are now eligible, will be welcome to apply for July lockdown support payments and will be considered outside of the automatic top-up process,” Mr Pakula said.
