hussein came in and murdered thousands of people during the air cap. the other part of the u.n. resolution though talked about protecting the population and i think the pentagon is liberally interpreting this to try and destroy the center of gravity of the libyan gadhafi forces which is tanks, artillery, armored personnel carriers. they ve done a super job and they ve also now closed down his air defense and closed down his air force. the president himself has said this mission will be days, not weeks. secretary gates said yesterday he hopes to turn this over in a matter of days. are they setting themselves up a little bit if we re not out in a matter of days and the questions start rising as to how long exactly we re going to be there? well, you know, i think nato forces, french, uk, u.s., have operated for 40 years together. so we can take that u.s. command and control facility, the uss mount whitney s out in the
libya. and the u.n. resolution, general, clearly laid out a broad responsibility here for the international countries of this coalition of allied forces to not only enforce a no fly zone but also to intercept any weapons that were embargoed against libya at this point, that libya had been banned from having. do you think that the actions that have been taken so far have clearly fallen under this u.n. mandate? well, first of all, there s almost nobody in his right mind that s going to send weapons to the libyan gadhafi forces. he is the most widely hated arab leader in the arab world in their history. he tried to kill the saudi king. i don t think the question is are the russians going to ship armaments to libyans. they re not going to do that. the real question is, how are we going to intervene on the part
executing their operational plans. they ve moved the aircraft down into the region. we should expect to see some participation by the danes, maybe the canadians and others. uae apparently has their aircraft now moved into the mediterranean area and then potentially of course immense u.s. naval air power and precision guided munitions could also be brought into the battle. and there is our u.s. ships that are now in the mediterranean sea. the united nations resolution clearly calls out not just for enforcement of a no fly zone but to intercept any sort of military aid that is banned by u.n. resolution that could be going into support moammar gadhafi s forces. and yet already we re seeing today a resolution that russia abstained on and so did china, russia taking a stand and saying it regrets western forces are taking this action. is that problematic for this effort in any way? i don t think it really is
[ female announcer ] how does your next week look? why not get away and book a royal caribbean cruise at royalcaribbean.com today? we re watching breaking news from libya where the french have gone in with jets and attacked on the ground some of moammar gadhafi s armored vehicles and tanks, perhaps some of the same that violated the cease-fire this morning by firing on benghazi. the reaction from rebels on the ground, this is the rebel stronghold of benghazi one of the few places that remain in rebel power was immediate and over joyed, very excited the international allied forces are coming in to support them. you can see some of their reactions here in benghazi as they celebrated the unresolution 1973 that authorized all necessary measures to enforce
