Highway workers and a police chief in Ulster County are being honored for heroic, quick-thinking actions that saved a man’s life.
Four Marlborough Highway workers Superintendent John Alonge, Don Fredrick, Harry Freeborn, Gary Lazaroff and Marlborough Police Chief Jerry Cocozza, received Liberty Medals from Sen. James Skoufis Tuesday. It s the highest honor in the state.
The men are being honored for their heroism in 2019 when a fuel tanker overturned outside of their job. They used a front-end loader to rescue the driver before spreading sand, to keep thousands of gallons of fuel oil from spilling into a nearby stream.
