During the Jan.12, Liberty County Board of Education meeting the Board voted to appoint Donita Strickland as the new Vice-Chair by a 6-1 vote with Marcus Scott IV voting against.
Strickland and Marcus Scott IV had both expressed their willingness to run according to Chairwoman Lily Baker. Board member Carol Guyett nominated Strickland, her motion was seconded, and the Board voted.

The year 2020 will be a year folks will remember for a long time. From local elections, to a worldwide pandemic we have seen a lot in Liberty and Long County this year Here is a look at some of the top stories from the first half of 2020.

In January the year got off to a bad start as two people were killed in Long County New Year’s Eve. Mark Richardson was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home on the 1400 block of Tommie Hines Road. Authorities found Shamica Richardson suffering from a gunshot wound at her home in the 1500 block of Tommie Hines Road. She was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart, where she was later pronounced dead.

(Hinesville, GA) Tuesday, December 15, 2020, the Liberty County Board of Education held a swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Board Member, Mr. Marcus Scott IV, representing District 2, and returning Board Members, Mrs. Verdell Jones, representing District 1, and Ms. Carol Guyett, representing District 3. Several community leaders announced their retirements last week. During the Dec. 17 City of Hinesville Council meeting, Hinesville Police Chief Bill Kirkendall announced it would be his last meeting as Chief of Police. The same day at the County Commission meeting Liberty Emergency Management Agency Director Larry Logan’s retirement was announced. On Dec. 18, Donald Lovette was given a retirement celebration streamed on Facebook Live announcing his retirement from Liberty Regional Medical Center.
