Although the level of food security fluctuates both geographically and from year to year, the overall trend had been one of improvement over several decades. However, new conflicts and climate change have seen the situation deteriorate over large parts of the continent in recent years and now the Covid pandemic has reversed some of the hard-won gains. Report by Neil Ford. Many African governments closed borders for months at a time to prevent the spread of Covid, while others prevented foreign truck drivers from crossing their borders. By interrupting road transport, lockdown measures have prevented food from being transported for regional distribution or international export, or even being moved more locally to ensure adequate access to food. Some international grain producers also introduced export restrictions in the face of Covid concerns.

LIBERIA: BMC signs contracts for solar-powered storage

BMC, Liberia's procurement and consulting firm, BMC, recently signed engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for the construction of an "indoor storage facility" powered in part by solar energy. InfraCo Africa and GLS Group are the companies selected to implement the project.

InfraCo Africa & GLS to develop Liberia Inland Storage Facility

InfraCo Africa, part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), and Global Logistics Services(GLS) have signed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with Liberian contractor, BMC Group, to enable construction to commence on the Liberia Inland Storage Facility (LISF) project. InfraCo Africa will be the majority shareholder in the project which will develop Liberia’s first open-access commercial warehousing facility and operations. LISF is being developed by InfraCo Africa, with CPCS Transcom (CPCS) acting on their behalf, in partnership with Liberian logistics company GLS Group. The 4,600m2 facility will be situated 10 kilometres from the Freeport of Monrovia. LISF will allow businesses to optimise their supply chains, minimising stock wastage and damage which should ultimately reduce overall costs to the end consumers.
