born as a 2nd generation Chinese immigrant on July 6, 1931, in Jakarta when the land was still under merciless Dutch colonial rule, Lian Nio inadvertently met President Sukarno as a customer in her mother s barbershop prior to witnessing Indonesia s independence in 1945 and marrying Leonard Spangenberg who was of German-Indonesian descent in 1948
he remained the love of her life. The couple was recently congratulated on its diamond 65th anniversary of their wedding by the Dutch municipality and royalty. Their rich multi-ethnic and cross-cultural offspring comprises five children, two grandchildren residing in the Netherlands, four grandchildren residing in Canada, and one grand grandchild living in the Netherlands.
