Last week, as Cyril Derreumaux navigated his kayak beneath the Golden Gate Bridge on a sunny afternoon, a humpback whale breached beside his boat, spraying him with salty mist.
“I took that as a good omen,” he said.
In late May, Derreumaux, a 44-year-old French-born entrepreneur who lives in Larkspur, will launch into the adventure of a lifetime: an open-ocean solo paddle, 2,400 nautical miles from Sausalito to Hawaii. He’s planning for a 70-day excursion, alone on the Pacific in his 23-foot boat.

Ocean rower Lia Ditton, who rowed alone for 86 days from San Francisco to Hawaii last year, is selling her beloved boat. Would-be buyers should know it is a bit more than gently used.
The 21-foot craft is a decade old, made mainly of plywood and Kevlar and designed to carry a single intrepid rower. It has accumulated hundreds of days on the open ocean, carrying rowers on excursions ranging from the Canary Islands to Japan. At one point in 2016, having been abandoned at sea a year earlier during a hurricane, it washed up in Dublin, having floated unmanned for 92 days.
