The fashion festival turns 25. Who better to tell its history than its participants?
JEFF KENNETT, Former Victorian Premier, Fashion Festival founder: “The whole concept had never been thought of before. Between the period of 1992 and 1996, we were very much aware that we have to address the economic imbalance in the state, which was in a parlous condition, but on the other hand build up the things we thought our community would respond positively to. One of the things I have always been cognisant of is the creativity that exists within fashion. I made head of Just Jeans Craig Kimberley – an enthusiast and optimist beyond compare – our first chairman. We wanted to build up hope in the community and promote the concept of fashion in Melbourne.”

Rado has partnered with Dutch trend researcher Li Edelkoort to create a watch that reflects our current desire for a slower pace of life.
With more time on our hands than usual and external distractions temporarily muted, Edelkoort has noticed a shift in how we find meaning; an enforced break from shopping is leading to a potentially long-term change in behaviour. ‘The industry will respond to this, slimming down designs and producing responsible products that last,’ predicts Edelkoort. ‘But that doesn’t mean we will stop making beautiful things – on the contrary. The focus will be on less and better, reduced and exceptional, sustainable and intuitive.’

Recognising the increasing need for stillness and clarity, Dutch trend researcher Li Edelkoort has interpreted the meaning of life in a fast-paced modern society in the Rado True Thinline Stillness watch collection.
Her accurate analyses offer insights into current trends and sketch out a vision of tomorrow s society. People need to slow down the pace and start questioning the meaning of life and work.
