virtual events. organizers are balancing safety concerns and a push to get more new yorkers vaccinated with the community s desire to the return to the streets after a year of social distancing. brooklyn pride kicked off today with a 5k raise which has now transformed into a mini-street festival. those attending are going to have vaccines available to them from a mobile pop-up van provided by the city. msnbc weekend anchor lindsey reiser is joining me now from the brooklyn pride event. good to see you this afternoon on a celebratory day in brooklyn, to say the least. my neck of the woods. what do we know about the members of lgbtq communities response to the vaccine rollout and have you been talking to attendees and seeing if they re taking advantage of this pop-up? reporter: yeah, they are, and yasmin, there are a ton of people out here. it feels good to be out in a street festival type atmosphere. they ve already given out 25 vaccines today, which they tell me is 25 more than they
they vote. they re registered voters, many of them, i m sure, here in the state of georgia. so dismiss them the way that mike pence did and the way his opponent is, to me is very foolish. i think there s a bigger picture here that you had on the right this real anger against hollywood, in quotes, because hollywood obviously is all over the country, new mexico, here, everybody that people shoot, but the idea that this industry, your industry, has a cultural opposition to them. so there has been this longstanding resentment, quite frankly, that i think is a bigger picture here. no question. in hollywood do people sense that, hollywood is being depicted as almost an alien being, being imposed on red america. you know what s happening is that hollywood is more aenergizd recently which makes it more of a threat. hollywood is a diverse industry, in terms of, you know, blacks, latinos, women, lgbtq
judith, this idea that crime is on the rise, not true. the murder rate is lower than it s been in 47 years. you can see the chart there. that s the direction that the murder rate is going in. and crime overall is down in part because the economy is pretty good. what do you make of this constant fearmongering by the trump white house, insisting that the country is in constant crime turmoil and that there s terrorism around every corner? what are they trying to do? joy, this is dangerous alternative facts that are being presented. and this is really about making a stronger police state that bears down on communities of color, muslim people, lgbtq communities, that what we should expect out of this department of justice is an attorney general who really does step up to make sure that law enforcement has more money, that people who are
impact of it, that he is going to get rid of it. it is something that may seem esoteric to a lot of people but it s not. martha: the fear is in some areas, some groups of people, lgbtq communities, who stake in what happens next for you have a religious hospital, an organization that might chill on hiring people who have certain elements of their life that they might object to. that has nothing to do with the johnson amendment. this is about whether or not nonprofit organizations can speak freely and pastors can speak freely from their pulpits. donald trump has made it very clear. he s the first presidential candidate that ever addressed to the issue of lesbian,, transgender rights at a national convention, which he did. i don t think he is rolling back anything for anyone. he believes in liberty for everybody. he doesn t believe that there should be special liberties for some and then, a squashing of liberties for others. if you are going to be in the united states of america,
marching and rallying since then. just ended on 55th and fifth avenue here right in front of donald trump in front of trump tower. people have signs and people have been protesting all day. 200,000 people the amount of people largely at this rally. men and women children and it is something about equal rights and women s rights but also immigrant rights and people with disabilities and lgbt q. communities. people that clearly feel threatened by president trump and his administration. hi, how are you? tell me why you came here. it s about women s rights.
