FIDE has published its new world ranking list. In June 2023, Magnus Carlsen is the only player with an Elo rating above 2800 and leads the world rankings by almost 70 points. The best young players, Firouzja, Gukesh, Abdusattorov and Erigaisi, are steadily improving.
The 23rd edition of the European Women’s Individual Chess Championship will take place on March 17-30 at the Hotel Palas in Petrovac, Montenegro. The tournament grants 9 spots for the next Women’s World Cup. Russia's former world chess champion Alexandra Kosteniuk has revealed
that she plans to play under Switzerland's flag next year after the
International Chess Federation announced that Russian competitors can
change their country of representation following their country's
invasion of Ukraine.
Some of the top players and top youngsters were active in February, so there was some movement in the world rankings. Among the top players, Levon Aronian recorded the biggest gain; among the top youngsters, it was Gukesh. Ian Nepomniachtchi is the second highest-rated player in the world, albeit still below the 2800-mark. Ranked second and third, Ding Liren and Alireza Firouzja, did not play any rated games in February.
