COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - While Georgia has given the green light for teachers and school staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, South Carolina teachers still aren’t eligible.
However, school districts across the Midlands say they are ready for when that day comes.
Certain districts like Kershaw County said their hospital system will be handling the vaccinations, whereas other districts, like Lexington School District Two, are working to host their own vaccinations once they become available to teachers.
Lexington-Richland Five looking for substitute teachers

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– This Saturday, Lexington-Richland School District Five will hold a virtual teacher recruitment event. It takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
District Five is also looking for substitute teachers. “Substitutes are valued team members in School District Five and play an integral role in ensuring students continue to receive necessary education, even in the absence of the teacher,” said School District Five Chief of Human Resources Dr. Tamara Turner. “Their role has grown in importance as the district responds to the absences of teachers who are out sick, quarantining, or caring for others during the pandemic. As a result, there is an increased need to attract and retain caring professionals with passion and enthusiasm for working with young people to serve as substitutes.”

IRMO, S.C. Monday evening, ahead of Lexington-Richland Five’s school board meeting, students protested returning to five days of face-to-face learning.
School District Five currently has all students learning face-to-face four days a week and Wednesday serves as a distance learning day. Starting February 1, they’ll move to five days. I think it’s absolutely necessary 100% that they be in person, said parent Nicole Dozier at the protest.
About 30 students came to protest returning to five days of in-person learning, but Dozier brought her family to show their support for the re-entry plan.
Lexington-Richland Five returning to five day in-person school week, despite pushback

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– Lexington-Richland School District Five will return to fully face-to-face instruction after the board met last night and discussed the topic for hours. Leaders heard input from parents and students, but the plan to return to a five day in-person schedule next week was already in place, and there was no vote.
Leaders say safety of students and staff is important for the district, but the board ultimately felt kids learn better in the classroom.
The district’s current schedule of four days in school with one virtual day, will end this week when they return to all five days in class next week.
