Abbey Maillet, a second-year Sports Education and Concurrent Education student, has qualified for the 2021 World Rowing Indoor Championships after winning gold at the Canadian Indoor Rowing competition earlier this month.
“It was really great to race for Laurentian again and to test my ability. It’s been a year since I’ve last competed so it was definitely a great experience,” she said.
Maillet said the competition is normally held in Mississauga but due to the pandemic, it was held virtually this year.
Maillet, who has been rowing for six years, began her journey with her high school’s rowing team in Hamilton.

Can we just agree that Canadian Party Life is not a news source?
Canadian Party Life (CPL) is an Instagram page that features videos of university students from across the country doing dumb stuff (mainly while intoxicated).
So of course when they posted a screenshotted tweet saying “Laurentian University files for bankruptcy & owes three Canadian banks $91 million” they just went with it.
They took this information from Financial Post’s article “RBC, TD, BMO snared in Laurentian University bankruptcy.”
Laurentian filed for creditor protection but what does that really mean?

On January 15th and 20th, two positive COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Laurentian’s residences. Despite what information Laurentian University has released to students, some key details have been left out.
Firstly, students have been wondering which residences the people infected reside in. Other universities– like Guelph and Western– are dealing with outbreaks, and both have revealed which residences the cases lived in.
So why not Laurentian?
With East, West, and Mature/Married Student Residence (MSR) as well as the federated universities’ residences operating, there are more than 500 students currently living on campus.

Eric Chappell, President of the SGA says Laurentian students are struggling to find things to do right now.
His comments come after Laurentian University announced its new partnership with Kivi Park.
Kivi Park is a 450-acre, all-season park offering different activities like skating, skiing, hiking, and camping, located in Sudbury and a 16-minute drive from Laurentian.
Chappell said that they had initially heard about this partnership because Cambrian had come to a similar agreement with the park.
Chappell said that the SGA“had done some general inquiries but we saw the announcement from Cambrian and it gave us a good platform to start the conversation.”
